Ubiquiti UniFi: a focused starting point

UniFi brings gateways, switching and wireless into a common management approach. Ubiquiti offers several control planes, including Cloud Gateways with local application hosting. This can suit an office or store that values a straightforward operating model. Choose where management lives, who backs it up and who handles an outage. Fortinet: put security policy at the center

FortiGate can manage compatible FortiSwitch equipment through FortiLink, and compatible FortiAP deployments can extend the design to Wi-Fi. We consider this approach when firewall policy, inspection and connected branches are key requirements. FortiGate model limits and software compatibility still govern the design. HPE: distinguish Instant On from enterprise Aruba

Instant On is a separate small-business ecosystem. For example, the 1960 switch family supports cloud or local management without an extra cloud-management license charge. Enterprise Aruba CX switching and Central belong to a different design and subscription decision. Central device subscriptions vary by device and feature tier. Cisco: choose the management architecture explicitly

Meraki is a candidate for dashboard-operated branches. The quote must identify the licensing model, renewal term and expiration behavior; rules vary across models. Catalyst offers another route for supported campus and on-premises management designs. Cisco's newer Networking Subscription also spans supported management experiences, so a product family name alone does not define its management mode or entitlements. Compare the complete five-year cost

Ask each proposed stack to do the same job. Count firewall capacity with the required inspection enabled, powered ports, AP placement, controller hosting, licenses, installation, support and renewal terms. Add UPS runtime, spares and migration labor. A cheaper AP can be a poor value if it requires replacing switches or creates a second management process.

GHT can combine platforms where appropriate—for example, a Fortinet edge with Aruba switching and Wi-Fi—but we document configuration and support ownership across the boundary. We test employee and guest separation, the actual POS or handheld task, configuration recovery and the handover process.
